Micro Microphone

For those Parks-On-The-Air and Summits-On-The-Air enthusiasts that yearn for a tiny portable microphone yet don't own (or want) a messy, loud, and smelly 3D printer nor want to pay for having one built and shipped, here is an alternative.

Just use a panel mount 3 conductor 3.5 mm stereo jack, a salvaged push button switch, an electret element, and a short piece of heat shrink tubing. Solder the microphone to the appropriate pins (+ to tip, - to sleeve) and the switch from sleeve to ring. Keep the leads as short as possible for maximum stability and take care not to overheat the microphone element.

Cut a piece of heat shrink tubing just long enough to cover the jack flange to the end of the mic and use a paper punch to pierce a hole to fit around the switch. Shrink the tubing with just enough heat.

Use an appropriate length of stereo patch cord for the microphone cable.

Have Fun!
